I was just in Paris on my way to a cartoon festival in Caen. I couldn’t help but notice that Paris has a fair number of homeless on the street. I know New York does as well–perhaps we have different ways of coping with the state of our homeless population. Every city deals with it differently. But however it is handled, one thing is clear: the span between the haves and the have-nots is still much too large. Globally.

E-Reader Training
I don’t think anyone has broached the subject. If newspapers totally disappear, how are we going to train the puppies? Forget that with the end of newspapers a lot of people will be out of a job: talented journalists, editors, photographers, cartoonists, delivery kids. If newspapers do go out, I will certainly miss them. The local news, the spreading out of newsprint on the table. But as the above cartoon depicts, I worry about the puppies, too.
Perhaps, with so many people buying so many ipads and ereaders now (over and over again with each new edition), we will have a surplus. If we don’t already. However, I just don’t think they will work as well as newspapers in this case. And, frankly, in many other cases as well.
Do You Juggle?
The economy is getting better, but it’s still tough out there. Actually, that’s only what I’ve heard–I sit at my desk, pitching cartoons and trying to get illustration jobs. I rarely have to go in person and “perform” for work. My cartoons do a lot of the performing, and that’s just fine with me.
I have started doing public speaking, however, and that kind of performing I really enjoy. Because I have my cartoons with me, projected behind me as my support system. And it’s absolutely wonderful to hear people laugh. It’s addictive. It’s something you do not hear in the quiet of your studio.
If you would like to see me “perform,” to the right you can view two videos I did recently. And in fact today, I am shooting a video trailer for my book. Wish me luck.

An Economy for The Dogs
Things may or may not be really stabilized over there, but it’s heading that way. So maybe this little girl can get a puppy after all. Americans are buying now, it appears. Why not buy a puppy to boost the economy? Think of all the things you can buy after you buy a puppy. Dog food, treats, cleaner spray, paper towels, dog beds, chew toys, camera, leash, collar, dog training classes, Halloween dog costume, flea spray, tick medicine, worming pills, vet bills…it’s endless. But so worth it.
Kids pick up words they hear their parents say, and I can imagine “occupy” is a word being bantered around in a lot of households right now. The Occupy Wall Street Movement is fascinating–my cartoon is a play on words. The OWS folks may not have started with a plan, but it sounds like they are getting one. These two kids will probably just play.
