Appearing In Parade Magazine

I remember when I was growing up, along with the comics in the Washington Post, I always looked forward to the Sunday magazine, Parade. It was visual, so right down my alley.  I am very pleased that this week, I appear in the online version of Parade. Journalist Dr. Nancy Berk did a wonderful job interviewing me in advance of my speaking at the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop next week, April 5th in Dayton, Ohio. Also thrilled about that! Thanks to my friend and very funny comedian Wendy Liebman, for making that happen. Wendy is an instructor at the workshop every year. I can’t wait!

Drawing ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ For CBS

I love my job. Live drawing is taking me to all kinds of places, and last night it took me to the Ed Sullivan Theater to live draw the Late Show with Stephen Colbert for CBS This Morning. I am a huge fan, so it was beyond great to be there. Didn’t get to meet Mr. Colbert, but loved the show and loved being in the theater (with so much history!)  Charlie Rose was one of his guests– Charlie is a co- host of  CBS This Morning , the news show I live draw regularly for.
While outside the Broadway theater, waiting for my producer to arrive, I crossed  the street, thinking  I’d draw the building.  As soon as I began on my iPad,  I felt overwhelmed with the detail and knew I had little time to get it done properly. So I put the tablet away. But my instincts told me I had to draw the building, so I grabbed my iPhone (a figure of speech because it is pretty much always in my hand) and did the line drawing on my phone with my finger and tweeted it out. The Late Show retweeted it!  After the show, my producer asked me to color it in, so I did the color on my phone.

The show was very fast paced, as you can imagine. I was standing in the back, behind the audience, and drew as much as I could. The band was so great, Stephen was spot on with his political humor, and Charlie was funny and seemed very relaxed as usual. It was great to see the other guests as well–Jessica Williams is hysterical!
Wherever I live draw,  when I am done, I always feel I should have drawn more, particularly behind-the-scenes people and things.  I hope they invite me back!

Kill Me Now: Being on Judy Gold’s Show!!

Guest co-host comedian Karen Bergreen, Judy Gold and myself before taping.

I was thrilled to be a guest on comedian/actor/writer Judy Gold‘s podcast, Kill Me Now.
I met Judy in the lobby of  CBS studios in midtown, where she records, and the hilarity began immediately. During the podcast,  she asked me questions about my work, career, global  stuff, my parents, my sister, my kids and how I met my husband Michael. We talked feminism and comedy, and I had TWO–count them–TWO  Kill Me Now moments. I got kinda pissed off at some stuff, not at Judy, she was my catalyst.  Judy is outrageous, kind, thoughtful and very funny. You don’t find those things together in one person very often.  And she’s very tall.
At the end, Judy asked if I would come back and be a guest again. Absolutely, I hope she does ask me back! You can listen here.  And there’s a place to subscribe to her podcast, so do it!  She had Dick Cavett on recently and my  friend Annabelle Gurwitch.

Women, Sex, Relationships, Love, Etc

Avoid a fightThis cartoon will be published, along with 10 other cartoons of mine, in the TV comedy writer Ali Adler’s new book, How to F*** A Woman,  due out this spring!  Had a lot of fun coming up with the cartoons for her hysterical words. Ali, a gay woman, gives honest, heart-felt advice to guys about our gender, and encouragement to women. It’s very funny and at its core has a really great message…. and made me blush many times.

Women On Men = Women Are Funny

Below is a selection of cartoons from my new book Women On Men, published by Narrative Magazine

I think women are funny. We know that loud and clear from watching the Golden Globes the other night, when Amy Poehler and Tina Fey killed as hosts.  They were so funny in a perfect way–just enough snark and intelligence. There is not a special kind of funny that women do, they are just funny. Like men are funny. Things are changing for women  in many regards, and sometimes I think the outrageous idea that women aren’t funny is an old topic. But like so many things–it is and it isn’t.  Famous comedians may be breaking the glass ceiling of humor from time to time, as well they should,  but Hollywood is slow to recognize women creators, directors and actors who are funny.  And in the day-to-day lives of ordinary women, humor is not an easy option. There are still misogynists out there who don’t want women to be funny,  so let’s keep talking about it until it’s totally equal!
