Iceland And Women’s Rights

bike and door Recently I was fortunate to be invited to attend a conference in Iceland.  What a fascinating place. The conference was terrific also: called WE2015, the conference was founded by Halla Thomasdottir, a wonderful and powerful person whom I met when we both spoke at TED in 2010 (here is my talk about women and humor).   The conference was a series of fascinating discussions about closing the gender gap, and the importance of including men in our fight for equality around the world. Geena Davis was the keynote speaker, and she could not have been more inspiring as she spoke about her Institute On Gender In Media.  I live tweet drew the conference as well as some of Iceland.  Statistics show that Iceland is the best country for women to live and work, and they celebrated their hundredth anniversary of women’s suffrage while I was there.

I wrote about my trip for NewYorker.com, which you can read here.  The post includes more drawings that I did on my visit to this alluring country.

Women On Men = Women Are Funny

Below is a selection of cartoons from my new book Women On Men, published by Narrative Magazine

I think women are funny. We know that loud and clear from watching the Golden Globes the other night, when Amy Poehler and Tina Fey killed as hosts.  They were so funny in a perfect way–just enough snark and intelligence. There is not a special kind of funny that women do, they are just funny. Like men are funny. Things are changing for women  in many regards, and sometimes I think the outrageous idea that women aren’t funny is an old topic. But like so many things–it is and it isn’t.  Famous comedians may be breaking the glass ceiling of humor from time to time, as well they should,  but Hollywood is slow to recognize women creators, directors and actors who are funny.  And in the day-to-day lives of ordinary women, humor is not an easy option. There are still misogynists out there who don’t want women to be funny,  so let’s keep talking about it until it’s totally equal!

Pick Your Own Lunch

Just a silly summertime cartoon.  I love doing Sabrett cartoons, and have done a lot of them in my time.  What makes them especially fun for me is that they are usually captionless, and I love drawing captionless cartoons. And, the best part: Sabrett cartoons are pretty much always about New York City, one of my favorite places.
