Study of a Woman

When I got on the subway today, I saw a woman I wanted to draw. I studied her quickly because something about her countenance made me think she would get off soon. I started to draw her, and sure enough, she got off at the next stop. But I had retained enough in my head to finish the drawing.

Here is the finished sketch.

And here is a video grab of the drawing as it happened.

Year-End in Cartoons with CBS News

Over the course of 2017, I live drew many events and people for CBS News. I had such a blast, and look forward to 2018!

Here is a short selection from their website.

Here are a few other highlights:

Drawing ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ For CBS

I love my job. Live drawing is taking me to all kinds of places, and last night it took me to the Ed Sullivan Theater to live draw the Late Show with Stephen Colbert for CBS This Morning. I am a huge fan, so it was beyond great to be there. Didn’t get to meet Mr. Colbert, but loved the show and loved being in the theater (with so much history!)  Charlie Rose was one of his guests– Charlie is a co- host of  CBS This Morning , the news show I live draw regularly for.
While outside the Broadway theater, waiting for my producer to arrive, I crossed  the street, thinking  I’d draw the building.  As soon as I began on my iPad,  I felt overwhelmed with the detail and knew I had little time to get it done properly. So I put the tablet away. But my instincts told me I had to draw the building, so I grabbed my iPhone (a figure of speech because it is pretty much always in my hand) and did the line drawing on my phone with my finger and tweeted it out. The Late Show retweeted it!  After the show, my producer asked me to color it in, so I did the color on my phone.

The show was very fast paced, as you can imagine. I was standing in the back, behind the audience, and drew as much as I could. The band was so great, Stephen was spot on with his political humor, and Charlie was funny and seemed very relaxed as usual. It was great to see the other guests as well–Jessica Williams is hysterical!
Wherever I live draw,  when I am done, I always feel I should have drawn more, particularly behind-the-scenes people and things.  I hope they invite me back!

Live Drawing at CBS This Morning: Bill Nye The Science Guy!

As resident cartoonist for CBS News, I sometimes go into Studio 57 to live draw the guests and crew behind the scenes, working to bring the show live. Today was a particularly fun day for two reasons:  Bill Nye The Science Guy was one of the guests (!) ; and secondly, it was a chance for me to hang out with an old pal. Bill and I were close friends in high school,  and have kept up our friendship since.

I have enjoyed watching Bill’s career take off over the years, it’s just wonderful.   In high school, he was proudly a nerd and a very prominent one at that.  I was not, I was the shy artist of the class.  My locker was just outside the chemistry room, so, guess what?  Bill would pop out of the lab and try to tell me all sorts of facts and theories that he was working on. And it was with the same exact enthusiasm you see when you watch him on his shows.  That’s how our friendship began.

Bill talked today about how we should all think like scientists and nerds, with the belief that the problem can be solved.   I love that idea and the curiosity that such an attitude brings to the table.  And he talks about changing the world and that everyone in their own way can contribute to that change. Yes!

Below are some drawings I did today, and a few photos. I love my job. Enjoy!

Live Drawing The 2017 Oscars On Location!

I didn’t realize how much I needed to take a few minutes from reality (i.e. politics) and celebrate great storytelling and great performing. I love movies, and I love watching the Academy Awards every year. This year will be my second year attending them in person?—?this time, as resident cartoonist for CBS. I will be behind the scenes, on the red carpet and in the media press room.
As always, I draw what I see, and more often than not it’s the behind the scenes. That is perhaps what I love to draw most. People working away at this great show, usually without recognition. It takes a lot of people.
I attended the rolling out of the red carpet?—?a wild event with press dashing after the rolling carpet with their cameras and microphones (and me with my iPad and stylus). I was invited into the Dolby Theater to watch the Oscar production designer, Derek McLane, work on the construction of his set. And I got a peek at the food that will be served by Wolfgang Puck and his staff at the Academy Ball.
Security, as always, was very high. Scanners, barriers and men and women in dark glasses wearing badges were everywhere. The Academy appears to run a tight and smooth ship?—?and everyone is in a good mood.
There was the actual red carpet, with gowns and tuxedos and cameras. It was mobbed with people?—?actors, writers, producers, and all their family and friends, decked out in their Oscar finest. I didn’t see any really strange gowns or tuxedos, but I saw some beautiful colors and shapes and people.
The show itself was great, and Jimmy Kimmel a wonderful, genuine, funny host. Ultimately, it will be one to remember because of the snafu at the end, giving the best picture award to the wrong movie!
It’s really fun, here they all are. Continue to follow me and CBS This Morning on twitter and Instagram for more adventures. @lizadonnelly @CBSThisMorning

The 2017 Grammys: A Visual (and Musical) Treat

Grammys 2017 - 37

It was a thrill to go to the Grammys this year with CBS News as their resident cartoonist. I was on the red carpet with the team, and drew people who stopped to talk to the CBS correspondent Vlad Duthiers.  The outfits were great, I couldn’t catch them all by any measure. The men in particular were using the opportunity to go wild with their outfits.  No chance to draw Adele or Beyonce, for while they “did” the red carpet, they whisked by so fast, I couldn’t even get a photo!  Grammys 2017 - 7
After the red carpet, we went to the Media room, where we watched the proceedings on large monitors with tons of other journalists hunched over computers. They gave us boxed dinners of sandwiches and cookies, and coffee of course. As for the show itself, the highlight for me was the Prince tributes and the Carpool Karaoke in a fake car with numerous celebs and James Corden (whom I find adorable).
Below are the drawings I did before and during it all and some are also in a slide show on CBSNews.com
